Overview

The main objective of phase III was to develop HAp based coatings co-doped with Mg and Zn that will ensure at the same time an enhanced bioactivity, biodegradation, biocompatibility and bactericidal effect. The coatings were obtained under similar conditions as the ones obtained in phase II, and two types of HAp coatings co-doped with Mg and Zn (codified with HMZ1 and HMZ2) were characterized and tested. Compared with pure unmodified Ti, the results obtained from the characterization and testing of the HMZ coatings, showed that both coatings have enhanced the behavior of the unmodified Ti and could be successfully used in medical applications.
After overviewing all the results obtained in the current project, and the correlation were made, one coating of all was selected, namely HMZ1, and an experimental model was made.

In order to validate the surface modification techniques employed in the 3B-CoatED project, an experimental model that consisted of a Ti based dental implant, commercially available, and which wasn’t previously modified and had an unaltered surface, was exposed to anodic oxidation in order to obtain a nanostructured surface, after which was coated with the HMZ1 coating by applying the pulsed galvanostatic technique. Both surface modifications methods were successfully applied and implemented in our laboratory on the dental implant, indicating the feasibility of the proposed techniques.
